Tour options:   Capri; Pompeii-Sorrento-Capri

Divided in two municipal districts of Capri and Anacapri, it's the only place of the Bay of Naples that is volcanogenic. The island shows its calcareous nature with its beautiful steep dolomitic walls and many natural caves which make it famous all over the world with its striking "Faraglioni".There are different etymologic origins for Capri: Caprea or "island of the hard stones" by Strabone, Capreae by Varrone for its peculiar structure and its fauna, characterized by wild goat, Kapros "wild boar".
Capri was peopled since the old times, when it was still a continuation of Punta Campanella, with which it presents some similar geological characteristics. The Greeks arrived on the island between VII and VI century b. C. and they built a Phoenician staircase to link Marina Grande and Anacapri; the presence of the king Augustus was very important for the island, he stayed here and united the two towns of Capri and Anacapri. During the Middle Ages it was included in the duchy of Naples, but in 866 it was annexed to Amalfi by Ludovico II to thank for the liberation of the bishop, who was captured. In the X century the town was often attacked by the pirates and by the Muslims and the inhabitants were obliged to move to higher part of the town. Passed under the rule of the Lombards, Normans, Swabians , in 1441 Capri was annexed to the Aragoneses, after the war against the Angevins; in that period the subdivision of Capri and Anacapri was ratify. In 1528 the island was sold to Girolamo Pellegrino, who became Count of Capri in a period characterized by many attacks of the pirates; the most ruinous attack was that made by Francesco Barbarossa in 1534. After the plague in 1656, that decimated the population, the charterhouse of St. James got many landed properties and became the power centre of the town. During the XVIII century the town flourished; in 1806 the French made here some garrisons, but the English took possession of everything and built fortifications in the whole island. In 1808, Gioacchino Murat reconquered the island and built many fortifications, whose ruins are still now visible. Capri became the residence of many writers, who here drew inspiration for their works. Thanks to the beauties, to the mild climate, it's still now one of the favourite destination for many artists.

  The Blue Grotto
So called for the peculiar colour of the water because of the reflection of the sunlight, is famous at the time of the Romans and the king Tiberius made it as his private nymphaeum; at the seabed were found some statues of the pagan divinities and for a long time the grotto remained unknown, because the fishermen believed that here lived some evil spirits. In 1826 was rediscovered by the German painter August Kopisch and his friend Ernst Fries; since then it's the favourite place of thousands of tourist.
